Our Purpose

"The Philadelphia School District is one of the most underfunded and segregated school districts in the country."

- Dale Mezzacappa, 2022

School District of Philadelphia

  • In the 2022-2023 school year, only around 50% of students statewide score below proficient. Whereas, nearly 80% of students in the SDP scored below proficient - a sharp increase from the state’s average.

  • The district’s low scores is not the fault of Philadephian teachers, nor does it mean the students are not as smart. Rather this data reveals the structural inequities within our city.

  • 60% of Philadelphia kids attend low-ranked schools. Black and Latino students are the overwhelming majority of the student population.

  • Olney and Northwest Philadelphia are the lowest-income regions in the city with the highest percentages of poverty.

Here at Mathematicians in the Making, we aim to change the narrative of the history of our city by providing free tutoring to underfunded schools within our community and beyond.

If you would like to join our mission of opening doors of education to our Philadelphia School District, donate now, spread the page, or join us on Mondays and Wednesdays to become a tutor.
